Lead Teacher: Susan Knittel Shiloh Temple Church hosts our newest program site. Shiloh Temple Church is located at 1201 West Broadway Avenue in Minneapolis. Get directions here. The program at Shiloh prepares the learners for work in the health and family careers, as well as healthy family living. The program curriculum consists of career exploration, service learning projects, internships and skills development to be able to obtain a paid position and live a healthy lifestyle in order to work and raise a healthy family. In 2009-10, the Tree Trust program will expand to Shiloh as well. The curriculum is individualized to help students reach and excel in the Minnesota Graduation Standards. Shiloh offers a few unique advantages at its site:
The Tree Trust and YouthBuild Circle in Shiloh is designed to develop student employment skills and has a school to work focus. Students are expected to complete six hours of work per day, including academic subjects and vocational options available through the program. Last year’s students built a house in North Minneapolis. Students could earn up to eight total credits per semester through completion of all class and work experience activities. The top students receive paid training and summer jobs through a grant from Tree Trust. Other students work in the afternoon through the Work Coordinator. Students must interview to be accepted by the Tree Trust and YouthBuild Circle. Those who are not ready may join the pre-Tree Trust and YouthBuild Circle. next door. YouthBuild: Building Homes and Futures
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 30, 2007. At that time, representatives of the crew spoke and crew members were presented with tool belts. Within the first few days of construction, the home and detached garage began to take shape. Crew Leader Nate Banker says he has witnessed a lot of change in the general work ethic and attitude at the site. He added that this is the first full-time job most of the youth have had. “The crew has made amazing progress,” Banker says.! |
