head photoImagine: a new type of school with unique community and business roots--one that offers exciting learning through the internship process.

Welcome to the Minnesota Internship Center Charter School. We were approved by the Minnesota Charter School Review Committee on November 21, 2002 as one of Minnesota’s newest charter school. We are building a school helping older teens with multiple challenges--including foreign-born persons--excel at learning and in their careers.

We combine excellent classroom-based instruction with internships that will help meet some of the new Minnesota Graduation standards. While internships are not required (many students prefer full days in the classroom) they do offer much potential in career and academic growth.  Special education services are provided wherever needed, in all of our programs. You can read more about our schools in the 2003-2004 Annual Report.

The Minnesota Internship Center has been approved at a Work Experience school by the Minnesota Department of Education and some students combine work with classroom activity for some credit.

Curriculum: The academic approaches include LEAP’s English Academy techniques for relatively new immigrants, and Circle Learning. The current graduation requirements are aligned with the St. Paul Area Learning Center diploma requirements. Students will also be able to use the new Minnesota Graduation requirements as the basis for their program as well, and teachers will be trained in their implementation as they become approved at the state level.

The Community Learning Center model was developed initially by Wayne Jennings. In addition to the project and internships approaches, we use the following materials for coursework:

  • SRA
  • Georgia’s Circle of Knowledge Curriculum
  • Mindquest Academy
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology OpenCourse Program
  • Lifetime Library

...and of course newspapers and books from many individual publishers. Read more about this school and others at the Minnesota Department of Education’s School Report Card Site.

Our Mission

The Minnesota Internship Center partners with communities and learners to achieve academic, career, and life success.

Imagine waking up every day knowing that life is on your side.

Pillsbury United Communities (PUC) sponsors the Minnesota Internship Center Charter School.  Pillsbury is a great fit as a sponsor because of its mission and history in serving people facing challenges to employment and education. Part of the inspiration and training comes from our relationship with New York City Public School’s  famous internship-based alternative school, City As School.

Another part came from Designs for Learning, originally created by Wayne Jennings. Their Community Learning Center model allows learners to develop their own unique projects that lead to high school credits and graduation.
