Do I need to be a licensed teacher to volunteer? You do not need to be a teacher. You do need to have a positive and encouraging approach with students and feel comfortable with the subject matter.
Can I do this for college credit? Yes! Many students receive credit for their volunteer work at MNIC. Some volunteer as a part of
a class. Others arrange for internships.
What is the time commitment? The average volunteer comes 2-3 hours per week, for 4 months or longer. Shorter sessions and
time periods can be arranged. In the summer we need volunteers for the six week summer school session. The College and Career Advocate position requires a 8-9 month commitment,
but with other volunteer positions we are very flexible.
Who are your students? MNIC students are primarily low-income students of color. We have a small immigrant population, mostly from the east African
countries of Somalia and Ethiopia. Our other students are mainly of African American descent. Our students are ages 16-21. Ninety
eight percent of our students qualify for the federal free lunch program. Our average reading, writing and math levels are about 4th - 5th grade level.
Is training provided? Yes! Every volunteer receives a 45 minute one-to-one orientation, as well as ongoing support and additional trainings if needed.
Do you have day, evening or weekend opportunities?
MNIC needs volunteers from 9:00am – 3:00pm Monday through Fridays. We do not have weekend volunteer opportunities.
Where are you located? MNIC is a decentralized high school operating out of 4 sites in north and south Minneapolis: Our sites are located at:
· Unity House (in north Minneapolis) · Sabathani Community Center (south Minneapolis)
· University Technology Center (Dinkytown) · East High School (in northeast Minneapolis)
