Imagine waking up every day knowing that life is on your side.

The Minnesota Internship Center Charter High School is open to all, but seeks to enroll students who have not fared well in traditional high schools and alternative settings. MNIC is built on the principles of small learning communities. The core beliefs are the same as described in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s “Call to Action”.

The target age group is 16 through 20, although MNIC is the only charter school in Minnesota certified by the state to offer Adult Basic Education. . By building learning plans within the context of their own personal/career interests our students have renewed hope for the future.

Our Authorizor, or Sponsor is Pillsbury United Communities. MNIC was Pillsbury’s first charter school, in 2003. MNIC and Pillsbury share a common focus; serving people faced with the challenges including poverty, homelessness and employment.

Target Population We opened the school to those least likely to be served or wanted in other programs. The Minnesota Internship Center Charter High School serves learners between the ages of 16 to 21, and adults.

History The Minnesota Internship Center Charter High School concept expands on 15 years of success with job and career internships for young people at the SHAPE Internship Center (in Bloomington) and NYC’s City As School.

We capitalize on the unique resources of the city and other Minneapolis community organizations. The SHAPE Internship Center was created with McKnight funds, and gradually absorbed into SHAPE’s alternative school. Call anytime to our registration line at 612-280-2330!


	Collaborators/ Contributors MNIC has been unusually lucky to have wonderful community and individual collaborations for their learners. Yeacorps The school year at the Minnesota Internship Center Charter School (MNIC) is just concluding, as is the first science class program partnership between MNIC and YEA Corps. The MNIC campus’ were abuzz with the exciting news of growing fish, plants, and fungi on site! See their website at www.yeacorps.org The Carlson School of Management provides assistance through a class partnership and a group of gradate students volunteered to create a comprehensive staff recruitment Hennepin County Training and Employment has provided funding for Industrial Technology Training, along with a partnership of four Minneapolis area machining companies Employment Action Center’s Bright Futures *Program* provides career counseling and training at no charge The Minnesota Literacy Council provides funding for a small adult diploma program at the East High School Sabathani Community Center collaborates to provide our theatrical production program Catalyst Community Partners revitalize key commercial corridors in distressed urban neighborhoods by developing real estate and sustainable businesses to meet community needs and provide neighborhood jobs. The have several key projects in North Minneapolis, including our Unity House site, which they purchased two years ago. Recently, they have helped engage a number of local businesses to help support Unity house through their partnership with CoreNet. Pillsbury United Communities is not only MNIC’s sponsor, but collaborates for student success on a number of fronts MN Transitions Charter School is a frequent collaborator on projects Tree Trust was founded over 30 years ago, in 1976, to help reforest the Minnesota Twin Cities Metropolitan area in the wake of Dutch Elm disease. It provides extensive job-training and youth employment programs. Urban Hope Ministries New York City Public Schools NYC’s City As School trained our staff in developing internships as a school model. We are one of the descendants of this famous school (there are other related schools throughout the US and in twelve other countries We have two Americorps Promise Fellows MNIC has one full-time VISTA volunteer 70 other active community volunteers proving a wide range of services to our learners.
